My partner Tala and I make it a point of trying the Seafood Chowder of any place that sells it in any country that we travel to. This post will be where we post what we think are the best Seafood Chowders in the world listed in order of deliciousness.
1) Tony’s – 27 Wellesley St, Auckland, New Zealand.
This chowder was the first that we had come across to knock the very fine chowder from the White Heart off its pearch as worlds number 1. The chowder was thick and sweet with out being sickening like some seafood flavoured dessert. It had lots of seafood pieces in it made from a wide range of seafood and the pieces were chunky enough to give the chowder some substance and something to chew on. The flavours mixed very well and were not overly fishy, but you certainly knew you were experiencing life in the ocean rather than on the land. This was also the first chowder that we had come across to have carrots in it
2) White Heart – Corner Windsor and Old Windsor Roads Kellyville, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
This is easily one of the finest seafood chowders you will find anywhere, and until we had visited Tony’s in New Zealand what we thought was the worlds best. It is a fine textured creamy base with an excellent subtle flavour. Not too salty, not too sweet, not too seafoody the perfect balance to emphasise the seafood pieces in it. The chunks of seafood and in particular the little octopi are great, not too chunky but enough to chew on and also fine enough that you will always get a mixture on your spoon so you get the benifit of all the flavours in each mouthful. The mains sized serve is massive, so be warned either order this cauldron if you are sharing or be prepared to forgo the appetite you will need to enjoy the rest of your meal. The entré sized bowl is ample to enjoy this dish.

I’m a Canadian engineer that shares your taste for a great seafood chowder. I must say the best I’ve ever had was at “Paddy Burkes” in Clarinbridge, Ireland. This chowder is more seafood than soup, delicious to the last spoonful.
Nearly worth another trip to the Emerald Isle just for one more bowl.
Enjoy.

Hi Darren, thanks so much for that tip. I will definitely keep Paddy Burkes in mind if I ever find myself in Ireland, or as you say, it may just be worth a trip there to check out specifically! Yum, a sea food chowder crawl through the British Isles. Sounds delicious. There was two other places we tried, one a diner in New Zealand and one this pub in Los Angeles in the US. I took photos of the diner in NZ, but have not got around to sorting the holiday snaps so have not got these up yet, and I can’t remember the LA place. It was horrid chowder any way. Way too salty so even if it had any seafood flavour it was too overpowered by the salt. Next time I am in LA I will have to find the place again. I also had a chowder in San Farncisco by the Warfs. It was one of those famous chowders in a sour dough bun that this big bakery is famous for. Again, I took photos but have not sorted them out so can’t quite remember the name off the top of my head.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

Ah, now you are talking my language. My partner and I love seafood chowder and we too try it whenever we can. So far, the best we’ve found is at the Shipwright’s Arms in Battery Point, Hobart. Will bear your recommendations in mind and watch this space with interest!
